Sustainability
We are powered by sun and water
We are on a mission to reduce our environmental impact at every level, from our suppliers to our factory and even the roof.
Solar Panels
In December 2020, we took a significant step by installing 144 Panasonic solar panels and 2 x 25kW Fronius Inverter on our factory roof, capable of producing 54.7KW of energy. This solar initiative has been a massive contributor to our sustainability mission, allowing us to generate an impressive 66.70 MWH of energy in just our first year.
We engaged with local Harrison's business owner, Conan Carter, who guided us through the entire solar installation.
We are able to monitor the solars output online which has been great to see how it's performing every minute of the day.

Topping up with Meridian Energy
In addition to our solar energy production, we’ve partnered with Meridian Energy, New Zealand’s largest 100% renewable electricity generator. Meridian produces energy from 100% renewable sources – wind, water and sun and has a net zero carbon emissions across its operations. This aligns perfectly with our sustainability mission and ensures that even when the sun isn’t shining, we are still using clean energy. By combining our solar power with Meridian’s clean energy, we can confidently say that our biltong is contributing to a more sustainable future.
Heat Reclaim Technology in our Drying Rooms
Heat reclaim systems are advanced technologies designed to capture and reuse waste heat generated from refrigeration processes. In the context of our refrigeration drying rooms, these systems offer a sustainable solution by significantly improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact. By integrating heat reclaim systems, Canterbury Biltong achieves notable gains in sustainability, including reduced energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and decreased operational costs.
Key Sustainability Benefits
1. Energy Efficiency: Heat reclaim systems enhance the energy efficiency of drying rooms by recovering excess heat from refrigeration units and repurposing it for heating or hot water applications resulting in substantial energy savings.
2. Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions: By lowering energy consumption, heat reclaim systems contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
3. Cost Savings: Implementing heat reclaim systems lead to significantly reduced power consumption and lower electricity bills.
4. Enhanced Product Quality: Efficient use of reclaimed heat ensures more consistent drying conditions, which improves the quality and consistency of the final product.
5. Operational Longevity: By reducing the strain on traditional heating systems, heat reclaim systems can extend the lifespan of equipment and minimize maintenance needs.
Reheat/Reclaim Valves
In refrigeration drying rooms, maintaining optimal temperature and humidity levels is crucial for preserving the quality of goods and ensuring efficient operation. Reheat/reclaim valves play a pivotal role in this process by managing the heat exchange required to control the drying environment effectively.
Benefits:
1. Energy Efficiency: By reusing heat generated during the refrigeration process, reheat/reclaim valves enhance the energy efficiency of the system. This reduces operational costs and minimizes the environmental impact of the drying process.
2. Temperature Control: These valves provide precise control over the temperature of the drying room, ensuring that products are dried uniformly and effectively.
3. Improved Drying Performance: By maintaining optimal temperature and humidity levels, reheat/reclaim valves help achieve faster and more consistent drying results.
4. Cost Savings: The energy savings from heat recovery lead to significant cost reductions in heating and cooling.
We have invested in appliances that have 10 star rated energy efficiency.
We are proud to support and invest into a hot water cylinder and tumble dryer that utilise heat pump technology. These advanced systems significantly lower energy consumption by transferring heat rather than generating it, offering a greener alternative to traditional methods. Our commitment to these innovations reflects our broader mission to promote sustainable living and contribute to a healthier planet for future generations.
Locally sourced prime New Zealand beef
Our Prime NZ beef is one of the most sustainable forms of beef around the world, NZ has great conditions for beef production from our great pastures, our animal welfare and ethics.
We are proud to feature locally-sourced New Zealand beef supplied by ANZCO, a trusted name in quality and sustainability. By partnering with ANZCO, we ensure that our beef is not only of the highest standard but also supports local farmers and the regional economy. This collaboration allows us to provide our customers with fresh, premium beef while maintaining our commitment to sustainability and responsible sourcing. Together with ANZCO, we are dedicated to promoting sustainable agricultural practices and delivering exceptional products that our customers can trust and enjoy.
100% Recyclable Cartons
We have also ensured we are using suppliers who have these initiatives too, including our display cartons which are 100% recyclable and use vegetable based inks.
Our orders go out in cardboard boxes which are again, 100% recyclable.
We are continuously looking for ways to improve and integrate sustainable solutions. Please visit this page again for future updates.
